Launchpad
What is Launchpad
Launchpad is a free website for software hosting and development. It allows for collaborative development across multiple projects and teams, and was originally created for Ubuntu.
Why Launchpad
It was developed by Canonical Ltd, an experienced team of developers and administrators, particularly to support and encourage the development of free software. It has a huge user base with over 1000 beta testers to ensure that bugs are reported and fixed on a regular basis. Launchpad is host to many well known projects such as, Zope, Creative Commons and Silva CMS.
The advantage of Launchpad is that code can be generated and tested through a common interface allowing all participants to contribute based on his/her specified role. Launchpad is also secure, reliable, easy to use and helps to build your project's community via spontaneous team formation, creating a rich community structure. Such a shared community lowers the barriers for new participants to join your project. In addition, it allows the team to work more effectively with other communities to solve common problems, such as shared bugs.
Launchpad features and functions
Launchpad allows the project team to:
- Write code and make all your project's code accessible, wherever it's hosted on the internet;
- Track and solve bugs, whether they occur upstream, downstream or directly in your code;
- Create blueprints to allow shared development, implementation and tracking of progress;
- Cut the time it takes to translate your software; and
- Build a community support team and turn their answers into a searchable knowledge-base.
