scubuntu - Ubuntu for Scientists

The project

The aim of the scubuntu project is to develop an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution for use by scientists. The vision of the project is that scubuntu will become the premier choice of desktop operating system for researchers and scientists.The distribution will eventually be a true Ubuntu sub-project with all work released as OSS. However, scubuntu will differ from the standard Ubuntu desktop in that it will support scientists by providing applications to assist them in conducting research. read more >>

The name

Why Scubuntu? The name scubuntu is derived from Science and Ubuntu. We originally liked scibuntu, but that name was already taken by another project. In future, we'd like to work with the developers of scibuntu, and possibly even merge the projects at some point. Until that happens, though, we'll be called scubuntu.
